Provigil insomnia

Medication with Provigil treats excessive sleepiness and is particularly helpful for people having narcolepsy, sleep apnea and Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD). SWSD occurs due to working in night shifts or changing between day and night shifts off and on. Provigil should be taken only if prescribed and strictly as prescribed. Provigil is available in the form of tablet. Usually this drug is taken once a day. Provigil has side effects including insomnia, nausea, anxiety and headache. The effect of Provigil is that it creates wakefulness. It helps you stay awake. Provigil contains the chemical substance known as modafinil. Provigil has specific applications and is not meant for any general purpose as pain killers.

Till date the working mechanism of Provigil in promoting wakefulness is not clear. Unlike other stimulants, it seems to work in a different way. Studies reveal that 5% of people receiving this drug had insomnia as the side effect, whereas, among the people taking a placebo, only 1% of them were affected. Provigil which activates wakefulness, can also prevent the user from getting to sleep, if it works too well. Now let us try to understand what insomnia is. Insomnia, a sleep disorder, may have one or more symptoms such as problems in getting sleep, frequent waking up during sleep in the night and trouble in getting sleep again, coming out of sleep too early in the morning and having a non-refreshing sleep.

Improving the sleep habits can provide an effective cure of insomnia, in some cases. To have a better sleep, you should maintain a regular sleep-wake cycle. Avoid taking coffee, alcohol and nicotine in the four to six hours before going to bed. You should not do any exercise in the two hours before bedtime. Five or six hours before bedtime if you do exercise, it will help to have a sound sleep. Avoid heavy meals within two hours of bedtime. Do not nap beyond 3 p.m. A dark and quiet room having comfortable temperature enables sound sleep. If you do not get sleep in 20 minutes after going to bed, get engaged in some quiet jobs and then come back to bed when you feel sleepy. Before going to bed you can have a warm bath or hear to some soft music.

While trying to counter insomnia, you should not also forget to take Provigil at the right time. Taking Provigil at a wrong time can increase the risk of insomnia. Your doctor may not be able to ascertain that you will develop insomnia when you are on Provigil. However, if you experience any symptoms of insomnia while you are on the medication with Provigil, you should inform your doctor about the same without fail. Based on your medical conditions, your doctor may be able to conclude on other treatments that may suit your condition. Your doctor may change the dose of Provigil and give a new prescription or try with some other medicines.

In conclusion, if the patient has insomnia as the side effect due to using Provigil, treating insomnia by improving the sleep habits can be tried out. If there is no improvement, the doctor can be consulted for adjusting the dosage or trying with some other medication.
