Provigil weight gain and weight loss

Provigil causes sides effects including nausea, headache, stuffy nose, back pain, diarrhea, heartburn, insomnia and dizziness. This drug has undergone thorough clinical studies and what we have seen above are the documented common side effects caused by Provigil. These side effects occur in more than 5% of people taking Provigil. The other common side effects are many, including flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, hot flashes, constipation, drowsiness, water retention, shakiness, code sores or genital herpes, vision problems or eye pain and changes in taste. These side effects occur in 1 to 4% of people taking Provigil. Some side effects do not occur frequently, but are potentially serious. These side effects include anxiety, depression, hypertension, palpitations, muscle spasms, blood in urine, a feeling of dependence on Provigil and certain allergies such as rash, hives etc.

Even though the above side effects are the worrying factors while taking Provigil, people often have a delusion that intake of any medicine, including Provigil, causes weight loss or weight gain in their body. They always try to attribute a change in their weight to the medicine they are taking. How Provigil can become an exception to it? Then, is there any evidence that taking Provigil can affect the weight of the body, as one of its side effects? It is really very difficult to answer this question. Not only for Provigil, but for many medicines it is not easy to say that those medicines only have caused an increase or decrease in the weight of people taking them. The weight control system of the body has a complex mechanism which is comparable to the sleep cycle. This system consists of many competing forces. Some medicines cause weight loss and some cause weight gain. Some medicines do not have any impact on the weight of the body at all.

It is a known fact that Provigil is a stimulant. This may invoke a thinking in your mind that it may cause weight loss in you. In some clinical applications Provigil is used as a substitute for amphetamine compounds. Modafinil, the chemical substance in Provigil is totally a different one and the important point to be considered is that Provigil does not cause a restless condition in the people who take it in the prescribed manner for medical reasons. If viewed from this angle, it is very unlikely that Provigil causes weight loss. On the other hand, there are arguments that Provigil has the properties of antidepressant and so it can make you eat less, leading to weight loss.

In a pilot clinical study conducted in 2003 it was found that modafinil reduced the food consumption like amphetamine and decreased energy intake. However, it did not alter the ratio of macronutrients consumed. Also, the quantum of Provigil needed to affect appetite did not cause a rise in the heart rate, unlike amphetamines. The Weight and Eating Disorders Program at the University of Pennsylvania did a study and observed that modafinil may treat the obesity well, even though it was to be confirmed with further studies in overweight populations. Also, another study on Provigil used for depression showed that this drug was associated with weight loss. A study conducted at Columbia University reported that in the people involved in shift work, medication with Provigil had caused significant reduction in their food intake. Obviously this would cause weight loss in these people.

Whereas weight gain is one of the common side effects caused by most of the mood-stabilizing drugs, Provigil is an exception to it and this drug may help people in reducing their weight gain caused by those medications. However, much caution is to be exercised while starting Provigil for any reason and it should not be started at all without consulting your doctor.
